Workers of the Coastal Bend Win with Recent Judgement on Local Unfair Labor Practices

On Thursday, October 17, 2024, the National Labor Relations Board, NLRB, ruled in favor of worker’s rights and ultimately all construction workers in the Coastal Bend. Two members of the International

Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local Union 278 (IBEW LU 278) were found to have been victims of wrongful termination and unfair labor practices. TL Electric, a local employer has been ordered to provide backpay in the amounts of $45,000 and $20,000 to make right infractions from more than two years ago.

The NLRB made orders on TL Electric that have never been done before and reflect the staunch support for the workers in this case. TL Electric will have to provide training of managers, supervisors and

employees on the provisions of the National Labor Relations Act. TL Electric must also pay for this

training. Terminations were unfairly committed upon discovery of workers attempting to unionize their place of work and discussing unpaid prevailing wages, a direct violation of this Act. The NLRB also made an order for letters of apology be made to both workers.

In this economic landscape, working people especially those in the construction trades are not always invited to the table much less made a priority. Workers deserve protections from unfair labor practices, safe working environments, and above all else a seat at the table to ensure their interests. IBEW LU 278, along with other labor unions stand for exactly this. Our efforts benefit all workers not just union

members because we set the standard under the National Labor Relations Act.

Yesterday’s victory is no small affair. It is a loud message to the whole of our community, workers and

employers both, that our voice is here. We are not one voice. We are the voice of the people. We are the voice of workers and we are the voice of organized labor. Our union brothers and sisters stand with us in victory because we are in this together. Labor support labor.

We, IBEW LU 278 support leaders that will keep this momentum going. We support leaders that stand with us in building a community that celebrates the sweat of our workers and the dedication of our unions to defend the working class all across the Coastal Bend and beyond.

We are calling for a moment of recognition that workers can win. When communities, leaders and unions stand up for working people, we all win.

In attendance on Tuesday will be labor leaders, political candidates and workers standing in solidarity for the middle class. Please join us.
